We are all at risk from the harsh radiation of the sun and its damaging effects.
Australia and New Zealand currently have the highest incidence of skin melanoma in the world. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Sun protection and regular skin checks, particularly if you have fair skin, are the best form of protection against melanoma.
Ingham Family Medical offers comprehensive skin cancer service including full skin assessment with a solar scan machine, biopsy of suspicious lesions and therapeutic options such as cryotherapy, creams and surgical excision
The Skin Check:
A thorough assessment of your skin involves a detailed history about your previous skin problems and your risk for skin cancer. This examination is performed with the use of good lighting and with the aid of a dermatoscope. A skin check can be performed for anyone who is concerned about their skin. Based on the assessment your doctor may recommend you have a solar scan, a biopsy, cryotherapy, creams or a surgical excision.
Treatment options
Treatment options for skin cancer continue to develop and now in addition to surgical methods some skin cancers respond to treatment of various prescription creams. Cryotherapy which involves the use of nitrogen is an old method and still plays a great part in the treatment in some pre-cancerous lesions. All of the GP’S at Ingham Family Medical Practice are trained in skin cancer detection and removal. We have a dedicated excision room that is fully equipped to perform minor surgery. The majority of skin cancers therefore can be treated with the most advanced technology and comfort at Ingham Family Medical. A smaller number of high risk cancers may need to be referred to specialized dermatologists or plastic surgeons in Townsville, Cairns or Brisbane. Your GP will arrange a referral for you.
