280 Australian’s develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every 5 minutes.

DIABETES – WHAT IS IT?

Diabetes is a condition where the normal process of absorbing glucose (sugar) from food fails and this glucose stays in the blood too long.  This then upsets other body processes which start to malfunction or work poorly.  Eventually significant health problems and serious illness results.

This is a chronic condition for which we do not have a cure, but effective self-management strategies will control the progression of this hidden and silent problem. It’s possible to live a normal life in good health.

One of our tasks at Ingham Family Medical Practice is to offer you individual support and inspiration to understand and confidently, effectively manage your health; to stay well.

DIABETES – WHAT ARE THE TYPES?

It is not one condition- there are three main types of diabetes:

All types of diabetes are complex and require daily care and management. Diabetes does not discriminate, anyone can develop diabetes

DIABETES – WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR?

Do you have any of these symptoms?

  1. Constant tiredness, lack of energy, can’t get moving
  2. Going to the toilet a lot or frequently passing urine
  3. Excessive thirst – always needing a drink of water
  4. Vision blurring
  5. Itchy skin or wounds that don’t heal well

If you are experiencing two or more of these it may be an alert to have a medical check-up and if you are over 40 years of age, request a check for diabetes. Call the practice to book an appointment.
